Mashed potatoes with turnip

This mash is a classic side dish for Swedish meatballs.  You can also use it as a topping for a Swedish meatball shepherds pie.

Serves 4-6

  • 1/2 lb. turnip

  • 1 1/2 lb. potatoes

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 2-4 tbs. butter

  • 1-2 tsp. salt

  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper

Trim and peel the turnip, and scrub/spot peel any brown spots from the potatoes.  Cut the vegetables into 1 inch cubes, and place in a saucepan with salted water to cover.  Bring to a boil and simmer until turnips are very tender when pierced with a fork, 20-25 minutes.

Drain and mash, adding the milk, butter, salt and pepper while the vegetables are hot.  Adjust seasonings, and serve with a pat of butter on top if desired.
